MTV Movie Awards: Amy Schumer scores the laughs

Share

For those who might not understand how the MTV Movie Awards are not the Oscars, host Amy Schumer spelled it out during the telecast’s opener Sunday.

“This is the only show,” she said to the crowd at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, “where the best movies are voted on by the people who keep ‘Catfish’ and ‘Teen Mom’ on the air.”

The audience found Schumer funny at the start, as she reeled off jokes about comedic genius award recipient Kevin Hart.

“Kevin Hart sees his shadow and we get six more Kevin Hart movies,” Schumer said.

Schumer also peppered the show with edgier pretaped bits including one about Schumer and girlfriends arriving at the movie theater to see “Magic Mike XXL” and “Fifty Shades of Grey” with implements to help them -- how shall we say -- fully enjoy the show.

But other attempts at comedy, particularly those by the cast of “Magic Mike XXL,” fell flat. Better received were some of the performances, including the rock and hip-hop mashup of Fall Out Boy and rapper Fetty Wap, who offered a guitar- and drum-infused version of “Trap Queen.”

But soon enough, the focus shifted back to the big screen, and cast members of “The Avengers” assembled onstage to present Robert Downey Jr the generation award, MTV’s version of a lifetime achievement award.

Downey took the stage in red-lens shades to give his words of wisdom to the youth looking on: “Dream big. Work hard. Keep your nose clean.”
