Scenic Artists Dena D'Angelo, left, and Gayle Etcheverry, right, prepare to spray a fresh coat of paint on one of two 24-foot-tall Oscar statues Monday morning at a undisclosed Los Angeles County location in preparation for the Governors Awards and the 82nd Academy Awards. All the Oscar statues are getting a new coat of paint that will have more shine this year, with a darker base that more closely resembles the statuette. The scenic artists are using a low VOC paint that has no metal and is more California compliant. The academy will present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producer-executive John Calley, and honorary awards to actress Lauren Bacall, producer-director Roger Corman and cinematographer Gordon Willis. All four awards will be presented at the academy's inaugural Governors Awards event on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center. The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010. (Al Seib / Los Angeles Times)Al Seib / Los Angeles Times
