Jennifer Lawrence reveals her ‘tone-deaf’ singing voice to Letterman

David Letterman’s interviewing days are numbered, and most nights he looks like he’s totally fine with that. But occasionally, he has on a guest that he truly enjoys talking to and the show immediately comes alive. Jennifer Lawrence is one of those guests.

The Oscar-winner came on Wednesday night to discuss the latest “Hunger Games” movie, but mainly she and Dave talked about her many, many neuroses. From her health problems (which they’ve discussed before) to her complete and utter mortification at singing in public.

Lawrence describes her singing voice as a “tone-deaf, Amy Winehouse” growl. And when she had to sing during filming of “Mockingjay,” she says she cried on set.

But where does this fear come from? Like many things, it all starts with her parents.

“I have a Southern mother who would tell me I was amazing at everything and I could do anything,” she said. “But I can’t.”

That false confidence led to her performing a Christmas carol in front of her school when she was 8 years old.

“My dad laughed. For an entire week I heard him around the house... imitating me,” she said.

Letterman, a dad himself, couldn’t help but fall into the dad trap of imitating Lawrence’s grumbly Christmas tune. And then she joined him.

When Letterman’s retired, we won’t get to see many duets with Oscar winners like this anymore.
