Music, girl power and selfies forever: This week from HS Insider

Share

We are starting a new weekly roundup of stories from High School Insider, a site where students post their stories on latimes.com. More than 100 Southern California schools participate. If you — or your students — have important stories to tell and would like to participate, check out this link for all the details.

Music in the classroom: Distraction or benefit?
Does listening to music while taking tests help with concentration and relaxation? Or is it a distraction that could even lead to cheating? Mariyah Plair and Ariella Aquino (USC Cinematic Arts & Engineering) investigated these questions.
Ladies' choice: Why I'm a feminist
“Why don’t you just ask him out?” I ask. All six pouts melt into looks of disgust as the unmistakable word, cold and metallic, slithers out of teeth both clenched and bracketed.“Ew.” Maya Maharaj* (Orange County School of the Arts) wrote about why she is a feminist, and questions her peers accepting the theory that only boys can ask girls out. "The idea is that women should always be given the choice to do things that men can do and in return that men can be given the choice to do things that women do."
Selfies forever
"Selfies have existed for centuries in all different forms," Shaneli Mirpuri (Granada Hills) wrote in her piece questioning the assumption that the phenomenon is narcissistic, or even new. "Maybe it is finally time to fully embrace them and have a little fun, without any judgment." She took on selfie doubters, arguing that the photos are empowering and another step in the technological evolution of the camera.
