Moksha fest to bring all things yoga and more to L.A.

Next weekend, the Los Angeles Convention Center may be the mellowest place in the city when the 4th annual Moksha Festival rolls out the yoga mats in celebration of the ancient yoga philosophy.

The festival aims to spread awareness of the six systems of yoga, said founder Arvind Chittumalla. The festival combines music, yoga, workshops, lectures and a marketplace of “conscious living” vendors who represent yoga systems such as asana, raja, bhakti, jnana and karma.

This year, the nearly 2,000 expected attendees can sign up for 40 classes and workshops on yoga dance and philosophy, meditation, Sanskrit, Ayurveda and nutrition, interspersed with nine musical groups leading kirtan chants and sacred music concerts. Musical highlights include the twang-inflected kirtan of Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band, the bluesy Dave Stringer, Simrit Kaur, and Deepak Ramapriyan and the Breath of Life Tribe.

A Healing Camp includes Chinese medicine, massage therapy and energy healing. The Conscious Marketplace features 75 vendors offering artwork, apparel, jewelry, books, education, and information on healing, bodywork and nonprofit organizations.

“After the last Moksha Festival, I thought, ‘What can I do again to take the yoga further?’” said Chittumalla. He’s added a spiritual art exhibition, a makeshift temple, sacred dance and movement, and film screenings, including “Yoga Maya,” a documentary he produced and directed.

A weekend pass for all events is $125; day passes for Saturday or Sunday are $75 each; a one-day music pass, $45; one-day workshop pass, $45; one-day market pass, $10. For tickets or more information, go to www.mokshafestival.com.
