What you don’t want to miss at Modernism Week 2018

Share

The Southern California desert is especially alluring in February, when the city of Palm Springs plays host to Modernism Week, the annual celebration of 20th century architecture and design.

This year’s event running from Feb. 15-25 will feature approximately 350 events, including architecture tours via double-decker bus, a show house sponsored by West Elm and Acme House, bike and walking tours through more than 20 different neighborhoods, parties at the former homes of Frank Sinatra and Dinah Shore, and a vintage car and trailer show.

Programming has expanded to include several new events, such as a self-driven tour of midcentury-style churches, talks and tours on a variety of landscaping topics, and tours of a recently renovated Morrocan Modern home by architect Hal Lacy and a newly restored 1966 tennis estate designed by noted Palm Springs architect Albert Frey.

Additionally, a new Architecture and Design Film Series will screen more than 20 feature films, documentaries and short films while the Palm Springs Modern Design Expo, an event focusing on contemporary home design products and technology, joins the Modernism Show and Sale at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

And if you want to get a sense of what it’s like to live in a midcentury time capsule, don’t miss Karen Valentine and Bob Coscarelli’s presentation on the Frost House (pictured above), a 1958 prefabricated display home in Indianathat has been relatively untouched since it first went on the market.
