Today's cars have many features that were unavailable in the 1980s and '90s, but they fall short in fuel economy. Other than the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic hybrid and Smart ForTwo, no car available today gets a combined rating over 35 mpg. Here are cars from the recent past that were great on gas.

1989 Honda Civic CR-X
The sports hatchback came in a fuel-efficient HF model, with an engine originally rated at 52 mpg (now adjusted to 45). A small car, it was popular with tuners -- who often subbed huge speakers for back seats -- and still has quite a following, despite the 63-horsepower engine.
