Readers React: Father Greg Boyle retracts his endorsement of L.A.’s ‘overdevelopment’ measure

To the editor: I am retracting my support for the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative (“Head of Homeboy Industries backs proposed ballot measure targeting ‘overdevelopment,’” Jan. 28).

On the strength of the recommendation of two friends, I agreed to lend my name to this effort. Only since then have I studied the proposed ballot measure further.

I want more access to housing for the homeless and the working poor. I am now convinced that this initiative will not provide that. At the same time, I also believe our city’s zoning policies are broken and in need of serious repair.

I will be staying neutral going forward, but I call on all sides to work through these critically important issues.

Fr. Greg Boyle, Los Angeles

The writer is executive director and founder of Homeboy Industries.
