Last week, Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, saying she “felt abandoned” by Democrats in her fight against same-sex marriage, decided to change her party affiliation.

As she put it: “I’ve always been a Democrat, but the party left me.”

“Really?” asked a number of Times readers, in some rather blunt responses.

Here’s a sampling of the short but spirited letters we received.

Edward A. Ruttenberg in Rancho Palos Verdes deftly summed up the prevailing opinion:

By switching from the Democratic Party, which did not support her, to the Republican Party, which did, Davis — who believes that marriage is a sacred rite between one woman and one man, and then between that same woman and a second man, and then between that same woman and a third man — has provided the Democrats with their strongest endorsement of the political season.

Lisa DeSa in Santa Barbara has absolutely no regrets:

I’m not sure which Democratic Party Davis has belonged to for “a long time” and now feels “abandoned by,” but the one I’m registered with doesn’t espouse the misguided stance she has taken on same-sex marriage.

Shame on you and good riddance, Ms. Davis; you’ll fit right in with Donald, Carly and the rest of the GOP right-wingers.

And with any luck, your 15 minutes of fame are just about tapped out.

Bart Brooks in Rancho Mirage is satisfied:

After hearing the lies and distortions from the two Republican “debates,” it is clear Davis has found her home.

And Carole Cooper in Manhattan Beach was full of emotion:

As a Democrat, I cried when I read that Davis is party-jumping to the GOP — that’s how hard I laughed. Thanks, Kim.

Steve Danning in Las Vegas had the last word:

I am neither a Christian nor do I agree with the views of Davis, the Kentucky clerk who opposes same-sex marriage.

However, I am eternally grateful to Davis for this reason: Now, whenever I perform a Google search for the name “Kim,” I am less likely to receive “Kardashian” as a search result.
