Readers React: Metro stations, or monuments to career politicians?
To the editor: The decision by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to name stations after board members and outgoing L.A. County Supervisors Gloria Molina and Zev Yaroslavsky is grotesque. Their work on the board was their job, which they sought and held without meaningful challenge for years. (“Metro to rename rail stations for Zev Yaroslavsky, Gloria Molina,” Oct. 2)
By contrast, there are many in Los Angeles who have given generously of their time and energy without pay to make L.A. a better place. Those are the true public servants, not these well-compensated careerists who style themselves as “public servants.”
The willingness of the Metro board to change its long-standing rule on naming stations after living people suggests that other members on the board hope to follow in the footsteps of Molina and Yaroslavsky.
What an embarrassment to Metro.
