Readers React: LAUSD tests the limits of teachers’ sanity

To the editor: Whenever any columnist writes about public education, he will be criticized by both the teachers unions and administrators. Such is the lesson learned with the Los Angeles Unified School District. (“A teacher loves his job -- and is so frustrated he might walk away,” Nov. 1)

Neither side seems to be on the same page, even when observable gains in student outcomes, however modest, have indeed been reported. The level of distrust is palpable.

While a few districts may have reason to cheer, the failure of LAUSD’s infamous iPad program and the disastrous rollout of the new student tracking system made people cringe. The level to which the district misused financial resources has raised our eyebrows.

One cannot even begin to think how that huge sum of money could have accommodated so much of the real classroom needs. With better judgment by the district, dedicated teachers would not have to be frustrated at every turn.
