Rainer began her film career by reading for an assistant of MGM studio boss Louis B. Mayer. Rainer eventually felt stifled by the frivolous character roles that he forced upon her. Mayer's motto was: "'Give me a good looker and I'll make her an actress,' which to me was an insult to my profession," she recalled years later.
