Standoff with armed elderly woman in Woodland Hills enters 14th hour

A standoff between sheriff’s deputies and an armed elderly woman in Woodland Hills entered its 14th hour Thursday night as crisis negotiators tried to coax her into surrendering.

“All efforts to this point have been unsuccessful and the woman remains barricaded at this time,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department.

Deputies went to the mobile home park in the 4200 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard about 5:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about a woman suffering chest pains, said Lt. Jennifer Seetoo of the Malibu sheriff’s station.

When deputies arrived, the woman “pulled out a handgun, pointed it” at deputies, then ran deeper into the trailer park, Seetoo said. She was acting erratically and threatening to shoot residents who came any closer, ABC7 reported.

The woman eventually made it back to her home, where she kicked back on a chair under her porch awning with the gun in her hand. Since then, deputies have tried to get her to surrender, to no avail.

The sheriff’s SWAT team threw in a flashbang grenade, a live broadcast of the standoff on ABC7 showed. When the SWAT team sent a robot over to her, she shot at it, Seetoo said.

Around noon, she was on her porch with her gun in tow. As of 6:30 p.m., the woman remained at the home, and nearby homes have been evacuated, sheriff’s officials said.

In a statement, the sheriff’s department thanked area residents for their patience with the “still active” standoff.
