Corona police fatally shoot a pair of pit bulls
Police in Corona shot and killed a pair of loose pit bulls Monday after the dogs charged at officers as they attempted to capture them, authorities
About 6 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a call from a man who was trapped in his car after the dogs surrounded him, said Sgt. Paul Mercado of the Corona Police Department.
When officers arrived, the dogs entered a nearby backyard and began to bark and growl aggressively at them. After an attempt to control the dogs with snares failed, an animal control officer began preparing a tranquilizer, Mercado said.
The pit bulls then charged at the two officers, who shot and killed them. The officers, who “feared for their safety,” fired from five to seven shots, Mercado said.
The dogs were involved in another incident on Sunday in which a pedestrian was bitten on his buttocks.
The pit bulls’ owners, who lived several miles away, said the dogs dug a hole in the backyard to escape. The owners were cited for a leash violation and for a failure to license the dogs.
