Pipe rupture sends water gushing into Larchmont neighborhood
A 100-year-old water main ruptured Tuesday morning, sending a torrent of water into a Larchmont street.
The rupture was reported about 7:22 a.m. in the 600 block of North Wilton Place near Melrose Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Television news footage showed water gushing from a small crack in the street. The pavement appeared to be buckling.
The 10-inch cast iron pipe had been scheduled for replacement, said Kim Hughes, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Crews closed Melrose Avenue from Gramercy and Wilton Place as they worked to repair the damage pipe.
Earlier, firefighters had blocked off Wilton Place as the small gusher flooded the major street.
DWP records show three water mains leaks occurred nearby, in the 500 block of North Wilton Place, in 2012 and 2013. In each event, DWP work crews were dispatched to repair a 20-inch, cast-iron water main there.
