Armed man shot by police in Echo Park near Sunset Boulevard bar, LAPD says

Los Angeles police shot and wounded an armed man early Sunday morning at an Echo Park gas station after chasing him on foot for about a block, authorities said.

The man was rushed to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he remained hospitalized Sunday evening in stable condition, said Sgt. Douglas Bowler of the LAPD’s Northeast Division.

The shooting led to the closure of Sunset Boulevard for several hours.

Officers on routine patrol responded shortly after midnight to an altercation outside the Short Stop, a popular bar near Dodger Stadium at Sunset Boulevard and Sutherland Street, Bowler said.

A large group had gathered near the bar and appeared to be in a “confrontational argument,” LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman said.

After the officers stopped to investigate, a man brandished a handgun, Eisenman said. At some point, police shot at the man, but it’s unclear if he was struck.

He then fled westbound on Sunset Boulevard.

Near a gas station at Portia Street and Sunset Boulevard, about one block away, police opened fire a second time, striking the man.

He was taken into custody and paramedics took him to the hospital, Eisenman said.

A handgun that was believed to be held by the man was recovered at the scene. It’s unclear if he opened fire at officers, Bowler said.

Police did not specify if one or multiple officers opened fire at the man.

No officers were wounded in the shooting. Police did not identify the man or the officers involved in the incident.

The incident is under investigation by the LAPD, the inspector general and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, which is standard practice in all LAPD uses of potentially deadly force.
