LAPD officer assigned to FBI-led task force shoots murder suspect in Anaheim, authorities say

A Los Angeles police officer assigned to an FBI-led fugitive task force shot a 24-year-old murder suspect in Anaheim on Tuesday morning as the team was searching for him, authorities said.

The shooting happened just before 10 a.m. at a plant nursery on West Broadway, where police say the task force tracked the suspect, Oscar Ramirez, the LAPD said.

Ramirez, a Las Vegas resident, was wanted by police in connection with a 2016 killing, authorities said.

When the task force approached the 24-year-old at the nursery, he had a garden tool — some type of pole with a metal, spade-like tip, LAPD Lt. Chris Ramirez said. Oscar Ramirez was combative with officers, so they tried to use a Taser to take him into custody, the lieutenant said.

The Taser wasn’t effective, the LAPD spokesman said. Instead, Oscar Ramirez lunged at officers, prompting an LAPD officer to shoot.

Oscar Ramirez was struck once in the shoulder and underwent surgery at a hospital, the LAPD lieutenant said. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday afternoon.

The LAPD sent investigators to the scene, as is routine when Los Angeles police officers fire their guns on duty. The case will also be reviewed by the Police Commission, its inspector general and the district attorney’s office.

Las Vegas police did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the slaying that prompted the search for Oscar Ramirez.
