Man suspected in Winnetka double-killing arrested at U.S.-Mexico border, authorities say
A man suspected of fatally shooting a woman and another man in Winnetka earlier this year was arrested after turning himself in to authorities at the U.S.-Mexico border this week, Los Angeles police said.
Jose Rubio, 23, was arrested at the San Ysidro border crossing shortly after midnight Monday, according to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.
Rubio is suspected in the slayings of Cassandra Anguiano, 23, and Victor Caceres, 24, who were found shot to death in a home on Oso Avenue on Oct. 24, LAPD Sgt. Jack Richter said.
Neighbors called 911 after hearing gunshots that morning and witnesses described a thin man in a white hoodie running away from the home, L.A. police Lt. Paul Vernon said at the time of the killings. Anguiano lived at the home, he added, and Caceres was a “casual acquaintance.”
After the shooting, Rubio fled to Mexico, Richter said.
“When he got there, he notified the LAPD that he wanted to turn himself in,” Richter said.
Border officials said that when Rubio reached the crossing Monday, he handed his ID to an officer who then ran a routine search of law enforcement databases and found that a warrant had been issued for Rubio’s arrest.
Officers confirmed Rubio’s identity and took him into custody, officials said. Online jail records show he was booked into an LAPD jail late Monday night, where he is being held without bail.
