Fatal wrong-way crash causes closure, delays on 10 Freeway in Montclair

At least one person was killed in a fatal wrong-way crash that forced a closure of all westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway in Montclair early Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

All westbound lanes of the freeway were closed at Monte Vista Avenue, with drivers being diverted off the freeway near the crash site, said CHP Officer Marcelo Llerena.

Traffic was backing up on the 210 and 60 freeways as well because drivers were trying to avoid the 10, Llerena said.

Calls about the wrong-way driver started coming in to the CHP’s Inland Division at around 3 a.m., he said. The person was driving a dark-colored sport utility vehicle eastbound in the westbound lanes for at least two miles, Llerena said.

Llerena said he was aware of reports about the driver starting in Pomona but that the area straddles the Los Angeles and San Bernardino county lines and that the driver could have been traveling earlier in different districts.

The head-on collision killed at least one person, and another was taken to a hospital, Llerena said. One person was arrested, but it was unclear whether that person was the driver of the wrong-way vehicle, he said.
