Officer shoots and kills man allegedly wielding knife northeast of Sacramento
A police officer shot and killed a man Tuesday after he allegedly pointed a knife and advanced toward him outside a McDonald’s restaurant northeast of Sacramento.
The deadly shooting occurred just after 11:20 a.m. at 3rd Street and Lincoln Boulevard in the city of Lincoln, said city spokeswoman Jill Thompson.
A resident called police to report a man with a gun and described the “suspect in detail,” she said.
When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect — identified as 37-year-old Brandon Wayne Millard — was gone. Due to witnesses’ descriptions, officers were able to identify Millard, who was known to them, as the suspect, Thompson said.
Officers searched for his car and found it in the McDonald’s parking lot.
After spotting the car, Lincoln police Officer Peter French got out of his patrol cruiser and encountered Millard, she said.
Millard pulled out a knife and pointed it at French, Thompson said. French reportedly ordered him to drop the knife, but Millard ignored commands and advanced toward the officer, she said.
French then shot him. Millard was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting.
The department does not have body cameras for its officers.
French is an 11-year veteran of the Police Department.
