A South San Francisco police officer remains in critical condition after a man struck him in the head with a skateboard during a Thanksgiving Day confrontation.

Robby Chon, a 12-year veteran of the department, was responding to a disturbance at a business on the 300 block of Grand Avenue Thursday, police said. When Chon arrived at the scene, the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas, refused to follow the officer’s commands, authorities said.

Ramos-Coreas fled on a skateboard and the officer ran after him, according to a statement from the police department. The suspect “stopped, turned and struck the officer on the head with the skateboard, knocking the officer unconscious,” police said.

Another officer took Ramos-Coreas into custody without further incident, authorities said. He is expected to be charged with attempted murder of a police officer and other felonies.

Chon sustained a major head injury as a result of the assault, authorities said. As of 8 a.m. Monday morning, Chon remained in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital, police said in a statement.

“However, he is beginning to show positive signs of recovery and doctors are cautiously optimistic regarding his progress,” police said. “His family and the South San Francisco Police Department are extremely grateful for the continued outpouring of support and prayers being received from the community.”
