Small fire briefly closes portion of southbound 101 Freeway

Share

Southbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near Boyle Heights were temporarily closed Friday as firefighters attacked a small rubbish fire burning in a nearby homeless encampment, officials said.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert about 1:30 p.m. for the southbound lanes of the freeway near the North Mission Road offramp due to the closure. All lanes reopened about 1:45 p.m.

The rubbish fire was burning in a homeless encampment at an underpass where the 101 and 10 freeways meet, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Main said.

The blaze was small, and firefighters had it under control, she said.
