West Covina police officer fatally shoots knife-wielding man, authorities say

A West Covina police officer shot and killed a knife-wielding man Friday night after the man’s brother was found with stab wounds, authorities said.

Officers received a report about 8 p.m. that a man had been stabbed in an apartment in the 4100 block of Sentous Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting with the investigation. The victim told authorities that he was stabbed when he tried to stop his brother from leaving the apartment armed with a knife.

The suspect fled the scene on foot, authorities said.

A police officer spotted the suspect walking on the sidewalk in the 700 block of Nogales Street, carrying a large kitchen knife, authorities said.

When the officer approached the man, the suspect “closed in on him with the knife,” and the officer used his Taser, the Sheriff’s Department said. After the suspect fell to the ground, he got back up and advanced on the officer with the knife in hand.

The officer then shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is expected to survive.

The names of both men have not yet been released.

The Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
