Opinion: Do we need a ‘Khloe’s Law’ to stop #stupidrude Kardashian antics?

Residents in beach communities from the Pacific Palisades to Mar Vista awoke early Wednesday morning to thunderous explosions. Was it a terrorist attack on LAX? Did a power plant explode? Armageddon?

Nope. It was the Kardashians. (Whose continued popularity may be a sign that Armageddon is near.)

Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian threw a 26th birthday party aboard a yacht for her boyfriend, Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden, and she decided to put on a fireworks show — at midnight, in the middle of the week.

The pyrotechnics were launched from a boat a mile off Marina del Rey. The fireworks lasted about eight minutes, which was plenty of time to scare the heck out of beachside residents and roust people and pets from their sleep.

The display was, as Councilman Mike Bonin tweeted, #stupidrude. It was also, apparently, legal.

The Kardashian party organizers sought a permit from the U.S. Coast Guard, but none was required because the fireworks launch occurred in open water, a mile offshore, The Times reported.

Los Angeles County harbor and fire officials were notified that a private party would shoot fireworks off a boat about 100 feet west of the Marina del Rey breakwater, but they are not responsible for fireworks requests outside the breakwater. Had the vessel moored 100 feet east, the county would have authority and would have barred the event. No fireworks are allowed inside the harbor.

Instead, it was bombs away for the Kardashians.

Los Angeles city and county officials, who were bombarded with complaints from annoyed residents, are now scrambling to determine whether any laws or ordinances were broken. And if not, some are asking if new laws are needed to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.

If there are flaws in how agencies manage events off the coast, then by all means, close those loopholes. But do we really need a “Khloe’s Law” to stop insanely rich and arrogant individuals from doing idiotic things?

You shouldn’t need a regulator to tell you that setting off fireworks at midnight in the middle of the week with no advance notice to the public is #stupidrude.
