Opinion: If Trump wants to unify the country, he blew it by naming Stephen Bannon his top advisor

To the editor: As we reflect on this unconventional election, one thing must be noted: The peaceful transition of power taking place is yet another marvel of American democracy. However, as President Francois Hollande of France said, “a period of uncertainty” lies ahead of us. (“Trump names Priebus and Bannon as top White House aides and says deportations will begin immediately,” Nov. 13)

While many pundits examine Donald Trump’s actions, his selection of Stephen Bannon as his White House chief strategist makes those who fear his presidency worry more. Bannon — the head of Breitbart News, which has championed the alternative-right, white nationalist wing of the conservative movement — will be just steps away from the Oval Office.

This was among Trump’s first judgment calls, and it will further divide the country. He must address concerns over Bannon if he wants to unify the country.

To the editor: So Bannon has been selected as “chief strategist and senior counselor” for the president. Great. Now we have a loose cannon advising a loose cannon.

This country now has two wars to fight: one against radical Islam and the other against the radical right. Heaven help us.
