The dream match-up didn’t evolve without a cost for the Villa Park and San Diego Mission Bay baseball teams, but the numerous fans and scouts who came to watch top prospects Mark Trumbo and Matt Bush got their money’s worth Saturday afternoon.

Trumbo ignited a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, leading off with his second double against Bush, then retired the side in order in the seventh to secure a 3-2 victory in the first game of an intersectional doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton.

Trumbo, who signed with USC, allowed five hits and struck out five in improving to 8-1. The Spartans, which came into the week ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, were coming off an 8-4 loss Friday to visiting Tustin in a Century League game.

Villa Park Coach Scott Luke wanted to save Trumbo for Saturday’s game against Mission Bay, but then called on the right-hander with the Spartans trailing Tustin by two in the seventh. Trumbo was removed after allowing a two-run single to Kevin Bostwick, the only batter he faced.

Mission Bay, which came into the game ranked No. 3 in San Diego County by the San Diego Union-Tribune, also paid a price for saving Bush (4-1) for Villa Park, losing to San Diego University, 5-2, in a Western League game Thursday.

``We feel our clubs are still strong enough to survive and win our leagues,’’ Luke said.

Bush, who signed with San Diego State but is expected to be drafted high as a shortstop in June, had a leadoff single and scored in the first, popped out and hit into a double play.

Mark Trumbo had a two-run single in the fifth inning of the second game for Villa Park (18-2), which won, 4-0, for a sweep.
