STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
At Hughes Stadium, Sacramento

Boys

SACRAMENTO -- Things didn’t go exactly the way David Gettis of Los Angeles Dorsey had hoped they would in the boys’ competition of the state track and field championships at Hughes Stadium on Saturday. But the Don junior bounced back from a disastrous start with a pair of superb performances on a hot day.

Gettis, who runs the second leg on Dorsey’s 400-meter relay team, ended up sprawled on the track in that event Saturday after he was inadvertently hit by the first runner for the Sherman Oaks Notre Dame team that was in the lane outside of Dorsey.

The mishap forced Dorsey’s Marquise Charles to wait for Gettis to get up before handing him the baton and left the Dons hopelessly behind in a race in which they finish ninth-and last--in 44.19 seconds after winning the City Section title in 41.40 the previous week.

“It’s just one of those things,” Gettis said. “You can’t go back in time so I’m just trying to shake it off.”

He did that quite well as he won his second consecutive title in the 400 with a time of 46.69 and ran a 46.0-second anchor leg in the 1,600 relay to help Dorsey to a second-place time of 3:14.06.

Led by Gettis and senior hurdler Kai Kelley, Dorsey finished third in the team standings with 28 points.

Union City Logan, led by double hurdles champion Kevin Craddock, won its first title with 46 points and Long Beach Poly finished second with 30.

Gettis surprised many by winning the 400 as a sophomore, but he was the overwhelming favorite this year and showed why by defeating second-place Kenny Moon of Corona by more than eight-tenths of a second.

“I was just trying to come here and run a good time,” Gettis said. “But I was kind of nervous a little bit, especially trying to defend my title.”

Poly was led by senior Derrick Jones, who won the 200 in 21.10, finished fifth in the 100 in 10.62, anchored the 400 relay team to a second-place time of 41.40 and ran a 46.9-second anchor leg to help the Jackrabbits win their third consecutive title in the 1,600 relay.

In other events, senior Bryan Rodie of Simi Valley Royal was a surprising winner in the 800 with a time of 1:52.04 and junior Mark Matusak of Los Angeles Loyola upset favorite Brandon Bethke of Lake Forest El Toro in the 1,600 with a time of 4:15.89.

Girls

SACRAMENTO -- Sprinter Jasmine Baldwin of La Puente Bishop Amat was aware of the talk.

So the soft-spoken senior walked the walk in the state track and field championships at Hughes Stadium on Saturday, winning the girls’ 100 meters in the second-fastest time in the nation this year and taking the 200 in the fastest time.

On a day when Long Beach Poly capped its second consecutive girls’ team title-and third in four years-with a national-record time in the 1,600 relay to end the meet, Baldwin proved her victories over Poly’s Shalonda Solomon in the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College on May 28 were no fluke.

“I knew that people were talking about me and everything,” Baldwin said when asked if she was aware that many people expected Solomon to beat her in the state meet. “But that gave me more courage to just come out here and fight and win.”

Solomon, the runner-up in the 100 and 200 in the previous two state championships, led Baldwin out of the blocks twice Saturday. But Baldwin inched past her in the final 30 meters of both races to post winning times of 11.33 seconds and 22.86.

The 100 time moved Baldwin to 12th on the all-time national performer list and her 200 clocking moved her to fourth.

“I feel very happy and I’m just very excited,” Baldwin said. “I came out here and did what I had to do.”

Solomon, who ran a season-best 11.41 in the 100 and a career-best 22.92 in the 200 to move to seventh on the all-time national list, also ran the anchor legs on Jackrabbit teams that won the 400 relay in 45.11 and the 1,600 relay in 3:35.49 to cut six-hundredths of a second off the mark they set last year.

Poly, which also received winning performances from senior Jasmine Lee in the 400 with a season-best 52.93 and from sophomore Shana Woods in the long jump with a career-best 20-feet 7¾-inch effort, totaled a meet-record 80 points to defeat runner-up Union City Logan by 30 points.

Four other athletes from the Southland were victorious in individual girls’ events, including senior Lindsay Flacks of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, who won the 3,200 in a career-best 10:26.25 after tripping and falling over another runner on the first lap of the race.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
At Hughes Stadium, Sacramento

SACRAMENTO -- Senior Marquis Profit of Pasadena Muir passed his first two tests of the state track and field championships at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento on Friday by winning his qualifying heats in the boys’ 110-meter high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles.

Profit had been experiencing pain in his left foot that left him limping noticeably at the end of the Southern Section Masters Meet on May 28.

Now the question is whether he or any of his fellow competitors can keep pace with junior Kevin Craddock of Union City Logan in the finals of those events today.

Profit ran a career best of 13.98 seconds in the high hurdles and clocked 37.54 in the intermediates Friday. But those times paled in comparison to Craddock’s wind-aided 13.53 clocking in the highs and his 36.71 in the intermediates.

“It felt fine,” Profit said about his left foot after the high hurdles. “I spent a lot of time [working out] in the pool this week and that seemed to help. It felt much better.”

Profit had posted winning and career-best times of 14.02 in the high hurdles and 37.11 in the intermediates in the Masters Meet at Cerritos College, but he bested the former time with a smooth, technically-sound performance Friday.

“I’ll go ice [my foot] and then get ready” for the intermediate hurdles, he said. “I’ll be ready to go.”

Southland athletes were the leading qualifiers in 15 of the 30 events contested Friday. But one of the best performances by a local athlete came from senior Matt Gray of Anaheim Esperanza, who qualified second in the boys’ discus with a career-best 200 feet 9 inches.

Gray’s throw topped his previous best of 195-4, made him the ninth Southern Section athlete to break 200 feet in the event and moved him to eighth on the all-time section performer list.

The top performance of the meet came in the boys’ 100 when senior Kenny O’Neal of Oakland Skyline won his heat of the 100 in a career-best 10.34 to move to seventh on the all-time state list with the fastest time by a Californian since 1995.

Domenique Manning of Riverside North was a notable nonqualifier in the girls’ 100 high hurdles as the state leader pulled up after clearing the third hurdle while running with a heavily taped right thigh.

In the girls’ team competition, defending champion Long Beach Poly remained the heavy favorite by advancing athletes to the finals of eight events.

Senior Shalonda Solomon of Poly was the top qualifier in the 100 with a wind-aided 11.45 and in the 200 in 23.30. She anchored the 400 relay team that won its heat in 46.01, the No. 2 qualifying time.

Los Angeles Dorsey, which was expected to battle Logan and Long Beach Poly for the boys’ team title, suffered a big blow when junior Vannie Prudhomme failed to advance to the final of the high jump.

Saturday’s meet will start with field events at 3 p.m. and running events at 5.

Pole vaulter Brandon Estrada of Woodland Hills El Camino Real, who originally wasn’t going to be sent to the state meet after tying for second in the City Section finals, was allowed to compete. He failed to clear the opening height, though.
