Angels fall apart in 11-3 loss to Oakland

KEY MOMENT: With the score tied, 3-3, in the seventh, Yoenis Cespedes fouled off two tough pitches from Angels setup man Joe Smith before lining a two-run triple to right for a 5-3 A’s lead. Derek Norris walked, and Alberto Callaspo hit a two-run double to right to make it 7-3 and cap a six-run inning.

AT THE PLATE: The Angels loaded the bases with no outs in the first off A’s left-hander Tommy Milone and failed to score. They bunched four singles in the second and didn’t score. Collin Cowgill hit a three-run homer in the fourth, part of a three-hit night for the Angels outfielder. Cespedes added a three-run homer off Jarrett Grube in the eighth, matching his career high with five RBIs.

ON THE MOUND: Tyler Skaggs cruised through six innings, allowing one run and two hits, but Kyle Blanks lined his first pitch of the seventh over the left-center field wall, and Coco Crisp and Nick Punto singled, knocking Skaggs out of the game.

IN THE FIELD: The Angels learned this lesson: Don’t run on Cespedes. The A’s left fielder gunned down Chris Iannetta and Kole Calhoun with one-hop throws to the plate in the second, becoming the first A’s outfielder with two assists in an inning since Matt Stairs in 1996.

TROUT OUT: Center fielder Mike Trout was scratched because of upper-back stiffness. “It’s not quite loose enough to where you want to risk further injury,” said Manager Mike Scioscia, who was hopeful Trout could play Sunday.

ROSTER MOVE: Wade LeBlanc, who threw 61/3 innings in relief of struggling starter Garrett Richards on Friday, was designated for assignment so the Angels could call up a fresh arm from triple-A, Grube, a 32-year-old right-hander who made his major league debut Saturday.

REHAB REPORT: Josh Hamilton (bone bruise left thumb) went two for five with a double Saturday and is five for nine in two triple-A games. The left fielder is on track to be activated Tuesday in Houston.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Jered Weaver (6-3, 2.99 ERA) will oppose Oakland right-hander Sonny Gray (5-1, 2.31 ERA) at Oakland Coliseum on Sunday at 1 p.m. On the air: FS West. Radio: 830.
