Colorado Rockies put Justin Morneau on disabled list

The Colorado Rockies on Monday placed first baseman Justin Morneau on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained neck, a move retroactive to July 14.

Morneau, hitting .312 with 13 home runs and a team-high 60 RBIs, hasn’t played since taking part in the All-Star Home Run Derby on July 14 in Minneapolis. He was replaced in the lineup Monday by triple-A call-up Ben Paulsen, who made his major league debut against Washington. The Rockies also designated right-hander Jair Jurrjens for assignment.

Giants’ Cain, Belt on DL

San Francisco placed right-hander Matt Cain on the DL for the third time this year, this time because of elbow inflammation, and put first baseman Brandon Belt on the seven-day DL because of a concussion.

The Giants also reportedly agreed to terms with second baseman Dan Uggla on a minor league contract. Uggla, waived by Atlanta on Friday, was expected to be assigned to triple-A Fresno.

Cain, 2-7 with a career-worst 4.18 ERA in 15 games, is earning $20 million this season in the middle of an eight-year, $140-million contract.

Former closer Sergio Santos, 0-2 with a 7.78 ERA and five saves, was designated for assignment by Toronto, which owes him more than $2 million. . . . New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will be sidelined for at least three games because of a strained muscle in his back, the latest injury to slow the team’s leading run producer. Teixeira, who has 17 homers and 48 RBIs, already has missed 21 games this year because of hamstring, back, knee and wrist problems. . . . Atlanta activated catcher Evan Gattis, who had been sidelined since June 29 because of a bulging disk in his lower back. . . . Philadelphia activated pitcher Cliff Lee, infielder Reid Brignac and catcher Wil Nieves. . . . Chicago White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper missed Monday’s game against Kansas City because he is suffering from vertigo, the same ailment that caused San Francisco pitching coach Dave Righetti to miss the Giants’ current seven-game trip.
