Yankees’ Mark Teixeira hits 361st home run
New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira runs after hitting a home run against the Tampa Bay Rays in August. The Arundel product and Mount St. Joseph grad was hitting .217 with 21 homers through Thursday.
First baseman Mark Teixeira hit a home run against reliever Joel Peralta in the eighth inning of the New York Yankees’ 4-2 victory at Tampa Bay to tie former Yankees great Joe DiMaggio for 80th place on the all-time list with 361.
Teixeira reached 20 home runs for the 11th time in his career.
Rockies retire Todd Helton’s uniform number
Todd Helton brought the crowd at Coors Field to its feet again when the Colorado Rockies retired the No. 17 jersey of their longtime first baseman.
Helton, a career .316 hitter, retired after last season following a 17-year career, all with the Rockies. He is the first player in the team’s 22-year history to have his number retired.
With his wife and two daughters looking on and in front of a full house that included many in the crowd wearing vintage Helton jerseys, the five-time All-Star thanked the city, fans, former teammates and his family for their support, and Rockies ownership for giving him his chance.
As part of the tribute, the Rockies unveiled a plaque bearing Helton’s No. 17 on the facade of the second-deck railing.
