MLB notes: Aaron Judge becomes second rookie in majors to hit 40 home runs

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge has become the second major league rookie to hit 40 homers.

With his solo shot in the fourth inning Sunday against the Texas Rangers, the 25-year-old joined Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle as the only Yankees to hit 40 homers at age 25 or younger.

That was Judge’s 40th homer, and he added his 41st with another solo shot in the sixth, a drive that would have traveled 463 feet unimpeded, according to MLB Statcast.

Mark McGwire hit 49 homers as a rookie for Oakland in 1987.

Judge’s walk in the second inning was his 107th of the season, a major league record for rookies.

Etc.

The Miami Marlins’ radio broadcast was off the air Sunday because of technical problems at its flagship station caused by Hurricane Irma. Play-by-play announcer Dave Van Horne, in his 17th season with the Marlins and 49th in the major leagues, said 940-AM WINZ in Miami had no feed for the game at Atlanta. The Marlins’ radio network on MLB.com used the Braves’ feed for a game Atlanta won 10-8 in 11 innings. Van Horne watched from the visitors’ press box booth. “I don’t remember it ever happening where that we couldn’t get on the air at all,” Van Horne said.
