No. 13 Xavier beats Purdue in OT on last second free throw

Edmond Sumner’s free throw with 0.3 of a second left in overtime gave No. 11 Xavier an 83-82 victory Thursday over Missouri in opening round of the Tire Pros Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Sumner was fouled by Missouri’s Terrence Phillips along the sideline, after the Musketeers inbounded the ball near midcourt. He missed the first free throw short, then rattled in the second one for the win.

Sumner and J.P. Macura scored 19 points each for Xavier (3-0). Frankie Hughes scored 24 points for Missouri (1-1).

In other selected games involving top-25 and Southland teams:

No. 3 Villanova 76, Western Michigan 65: Eric Paschall had 17 points, including a three-pointer with 2:50 to go, to help rally the Wildcats (3-0) at the Charleston Classic in South Carolina.

at No. 4 Oregon 76, Valparaiso 54: Chris Boucher had 25 points and nine rebounds and the Ducks won their 27th straight game at home. Jordan Bell added 15 points and seven rebounds for Oregon (2-1), which took control early in the second half with an 11-4 run fueled by Bell’s eight points to open a 52-38 lead.

at No. 12 Louisville 88, Long Beach State 56: Jaylen Johnson had 14 points to lead the Cardinals (3-0) to their third straight 30-point win. The 49ers (1-3), who lost by 26 points to No. 5 North Carolina on Tuesday, trailed Louisville, 30-8, after 51/2 minutes. Evan Payne scored 15 for Long Beach.

at No. 23 Texas 85, Eastern Washington 52: Tevin Mack scored 19 points and the Longhorns (3-0) had five players score in double figures. Freshman Andrew Jones had 17 points. Bogdan Bliznyuk scored 22 for Eastern Washington (1-2).

Connecticut 65, at Loyola Marymount 62: Terry Larrier scored 14 points, including the go-ahead basket with 2:20 left, and the Huskies (1-2) got their first win of the season. Brandon Brown’s three-point attempt at the buzzer hit off the rim for the Lions (1-2), who got 18 points from Kelvin Amayo.

at Pepperdine 85, Life Pacific 79: Lamond Murray scored 28 points and the Waves (3-0) survived a scare against the Warriors, a National Christian College Athletic Assn. team. Pepperdine led by 15 points with 8:34 left, but Life Pacific tied the score at 79 with 1:40 left.

at Washington 104, Cal State Fullerton 88: The Titans (2-1) got 23 points from Tre Coggins, but could not contain freshman guard Markelle Fultz, who scored 35 points for the Huskies (1-1). Fultz made 10 of 14 shots and 12 of 16 free throws. Fullerton trailed, 53-42, at halftime.
