Justin Turner is the Dodgers’ primary third baseman

Alberto Callaspo will start at third base for the Dodgers on Sunday in their series finale at Petco Park, but Manager Don Mattingly said Justin Turner is the team’s primary player at the position.

“It’s pretty much Justin,” Mattingly said.

Asked why, Mattingly replied, “Just kind of the whole package — defensively, offensively.”

Turner started the Dodgers’ two previous games at third base.

Alex Guerrero, who has 10 home runs, made his last start at third base on May 24.

Guerrero, 28, was a career-long shortstop in Cuba. He played primarily at second base in the minors last season. This season, he has started nine games at third base and 21 in left field.

Mattingly made reference to how Guerrero faces the challenge of learning new positions at the major league level and also said he likes having Guerrero off the bench.

Guerrero has hit four home runs as a substitute. He is batting .268 when he starts and .368 when he doesn’t.

“It’s part of the equation,” Mattingly said.

Turner is batting .319 with five home runs and 29 runs batted in.

In the past, Mattingly has said he doesn’t want to play Turner every day out of fear he will break down. That remains the case. Mattingly said he would like to limit Turner to five games a week and no more than three in a row.
