Dodgers lose their way in extra innings again, fall 5-4 to Rockies

Sometimes it’s just not hip to be a Dodger.

You could check with young stars Dee Gordon and Yasiel Puig, who both left in the middle of Saturday’s game with hip injuries, or as it turned out, reliever Chris Perez.

Perez gave up a game-winning triple to Brandon Barnes in the bottom of the 10th to give the Colorado Rockies a 5-4 victory at Coors Field, and snap their eight-game losing streak.

The loss left the Dodgers an ugly 3-8 in extra-inning games this season.

The Dodgers started weakly before briefly looking like they would rally for a rare comeback victory. They fell behind 3-0 after five innings to Colorado right-hander Jhoulys Chacin, who entered the game 0-4 with a 5.51 earned-run average in his six starts.

Yet the Dodgers managed only four hits against him entering the seventh. Having scratched three runs against Zack Greinke, it was looking like another flat Dodgers loss.

But the Dodgers opened the seventh with a walk to Matt Kemp and a single by Andre Ethier, and then Justin Turner singled to score their first run.

At that point, Rockies Manager Walt Weiss decided Chacin had done his job and called on reliever Nick Masset to face Ted Federowicz, who had largely started Saturday because he was 4-for-8 lifetime against Chacin.

Federowicz drilled a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw and the Dodgers had their first lead.

It was, alas, of the short-lived variety. The Rockies rallied with two outs in the bottom of the inning after Drew Stubbs was safe on an infield hit and took second when Turner threw the ball away for an error; defense continues to haunt the Dodgers.

Corey Dickerson then lined a single to center and the Rockies had tied it back up at 4-4.

Kemp led off the eighth with his first triple of the season, but the Dodgers managed to strand him when Ethier, Turner and Federowicz all harmlessly grounded out.

Greinke went seven innings for the Dodgers, and if he wasn’t particularly sharp by his standards, he battled all afternoon. He surrendered four runs (three earned) on a season-high 11 hits, with a walk and six strikeouts.

The Rockies won it in the 10th after Justin Morneau singled and Barnes hit his two-out triple off the right-field wall.

Gordon left the game in the bottom of the fourth, with what the Dodgers called right hip discomfort. Then in the bottom of the fifth, Puig left with a right hip flexor strain. He strained it sliding into second in the fourth. For whatever it’s worth, the Dodgers called both day-to-day.
