Yasiel Puig out of Dodgers lineup for third consecutive day

Yasiel Puig turned over his left hand, showing a callus that was starting to form in his palm.

“It’s better,” Puig said in Spanish.

But not enough to play.

When the Dodgers open a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Friday, they will do so with Puig on the bench again. The game will be the third in a row missed by Puig.

Puig’s callus was initially ruptured Monday in the series opener against the Chicago Cubs. He played that game, as well as the next, with his hand heavily bandaged.

The callus tore open Wednesday in batting practice, which led to his being scratched. He was also scratched for the series finale against the Cubs.

Puig was in good spirits Friday as he spoke to a group of Spanish-speaking reporters.

At some point, he was interrupted by closer Kenley Jansen, who said in jokingly in Spanish, “What a bunch of …”

Puig smiled and responded: “Why are you here if you can’t pitch?”

Jansen pitched in each of the last three days and was presumably unavailable for the upcoming game.

Puig turned his attention back to the group interview, in which he was asked whether there was anything he wanted to improve.

“Yes, hit,” he said.

Still smiling, Puig looked over at Jansen and said, “I want to help the team get to the ninth inning in better position because we have a closer who scares us every time he pitches.”
