Adrian Gonzalez hits, Joc Pederson defends in Dodgers’ 4-2 win

Turns out, you can go home again, they just might not like it.

Adrian Gonzalez, San Diego native and former Padres star, was back at Petco Park on Sunday wearing his Dodger Blue and breaking local hearts.

Gonzalez delivered a two-run single in the 12th inning to lead the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory that also featured one of the best catches of the season from center fielder Joc Pederson.

With the Dodgers’ beleaguered bullpen providing seven scoreless innings of relief, the offense started the winning rally in the 12th after Alberto Callaspo’s second double of the afternoon. Padres right-hander Dale Thayer walked Enrique Hernandez and Pederson to load the bases and got pinch-hitter Alex Guerrero to fly to shallow center to bring up Gonzalez.

Gonzalez sent a soft liner to center to drive in Callaspo and Hernandez.

Kenley Jansen pitched the bottom of the 12th to earn his ninth save and top a strong day for the bullpen. Six different relievers -- J.P. Howell, Chris Hatcher, Adam Liberatore, Juan Nicasio, Josh Ravin and Jensen -- combined to hold the Padres scoreless after the fifth.

Nicasio got a big assist from Pederson. The Padres thought they’d won the game in the bottom of the ninth when they had two on and two outs for Dodger-killer Justin Upton.

Upton jumped on a 95-mph fastball from Nicasio and drilled it to deep center. The outfield was playing shallow, but Pederson made a sprinting catch just before crashing into the wall. It was Pederson’s best catch as a Dodger, but his fourth terrific catch of the day.

It had looked familiar early, Mike Bolsinger somehow painting the corners with his curveball, the Padres flailing away.

When Bolsinger went out to start the fifth inning, he had already struck out seven and held the Padres scoreless for 12 consecutive overall innings. Nothing seemed remotely different when he quickly got the first two outs to bring up opposing pitcher James Shields.

Only Shields bounced a single into right and things were about to get away from Bolsinger. Will Venable followed with a single to right and Shields hustled to third base. Bolsinger made the mistake of walking Yangervis Solarte to load the bases and bring up Upton, currently about the only Padre in the lineup to be feared.

Upton, who had homered off Zack Greinke in the eighth inning to win Saturday’s game, delivered again with a two-run single up the middle.

When Bolsinger came back to walk former Dodger Matt Kemp and load the bases again on his 31st pitch in the inning, it ended his day. Howell got the inning’s final out to start the nice run by the bullpen.

Bolsinger, who held the Padres scoreless on one hit May 23, was charged with the two runs on six hits and three walks. In his 4 2/3 innings, he threw 89 pitches.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers could not cash in on multiple early scoring opportunities against Shields. They did not get to him until Andre Ethier hit a one-out, solo home run in the seventh. For Ethier, who had only four home runs last season, it was his ninth of the season.

Shields left after the seventh for a pinch-hitter. He gave up the one run on five hits and three walks, striking out six.

The Dodgers came back to tie the score in the eighth inning against San Diego set-up man Joaquin Benoit after Yasiel Puig walked with two outs. That brought up Gonzalez, who started his big day with a double to right to score the speedy Puig from first base.

Gonzalez leads the majors with 22 doubles.
