Yasiel Puig out of Dodgers lineup because of sore hand

His left hand struck by a pitch the previous day, Yasiel Puig won’t play Sunday in the Dodgers series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“He’s still sore and a little bit swollen,” Manager Don Mattingly said.

Preliminary X-rays on Puig’s hand were negative. Puig will undergo another X-ray exam Monday in Pittsburgh, where the Dodgers open a three-game series against the Pirates.

“We’ll obviously be cautious at this point,” Mattingly said.

With Puig unavailable, the Dodgers will start Andre Ethier in right field, Scott Van Slyke in center field and Matt Kemp in left field.

Mattingly said he didn’t consider starting Kemp in right field, a position he last played regularly in 2008.

“I’m a little bit hesitant to play Matt in right because he hasn’t played there this year,” Mattingly said.

The pitch that struck Puig was delivered by Joe Kelly, the same pitcher who fractured Hanley Ramirez’s ribs with an inside fastball last year in the National League Championship Series.

Puig said he didn’t think Kelly threw at him on purpose.

Kelly said he didn’t mean to hit Puig.

“I’m known to hit a batter a game,” Kelly said. “I don’t have the best command.”

Kelly has hit seven batters in 36 regular-season starts in his career.
