Giants shut out Dodgers again for three-game sweep

KEY MOMENT: In the six innings Giants starter Madison Bumgarner completed, the Dodgers had players in scoring position in five of them. The last time was in the sixth inning, when Alex Guerrero reached base on a one-out single with the Dodgers trailing, 2-0. That was followed by a single to left field by A.J. Ellis. Guerrero made the mistake of trying to take third base on the play and was thrown out. Rather than have runners on the corners with one out, the Dodgers had Ellis on first with two outs. The inning ended on a strikeout by Clayton Kershaw.

AT THE PLATE: With nine hits, the Dodgers had as many hits as the Giants. Seven of those hits were against Bumgarner, whom they forced out of the game after 6 1/3 innings. Bumgarner departed from the game with a pitch count of 107. Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly said of Bumgarner: “He just seemed to not be really locating. There’s times when he’s getting the ball right where he wants. Today, it looked like he missed his spot a lot. I really do think we had good at-bats.”

ON THE MOUND: Kershaw was charged with four runs and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings. Two of the runs charged to him were scored in the eighth inning with a Dodgers reliever on the mound. The bullpen has inherited eight runners from Kershaw this season and five of them have scored. Chris Hatcher and Paco Rodriguez were the culprits on this day.

EXTRA BASES: The last time the Giants won six consecutive home games against the Dodgers was in 1972. The last time they swept the Dodgers in consecutive series was in 1961. … The Dodgers were 0 for 17 in the series with runners in scoring position. “The Giants beat us, plain and simple,” Ellis said. “They played better. They were the better team these three days. We have to regroup because this is not the brand of Dodger baseball we want to be playing.”
