Dodgers throw away strong outing by Clayton Kershaw in 3-2 loss

KEY MOMENT: Fielding a single by Adeiny Hechavarria, right fielder Andre Ethier tried to throw out Christian Yelich, who was running from first base to third. However, Ethier’s throw ended up in a camera well next to the Marlins dugout, allowing Yelich to score for a 1-1 tie. Hechavarria ended up at third base on the play and scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to move the Marlins in front, 2-1. The Marlins led for the remainder of the game. Ethier’s error was the first of two made by the Dodgers, who hadn’t made an error in their previous 13 games. Their errorless streak was an all-time franchise record.

AT THE PLATE: Justin Turner hit his 11th home run, in the first inning. The Dodgers scored in the fourth inning when when Adrian Gonzalez singled in Howie Kendrick to cut the Dodgers’ deficit to 3-1. Starter Tom Koehler limited the Dodgers to six hits over seven innings.

ON THE MOUND: Clayton Kershaw is on a three-start losing streak, the longest of his career. He gave up only one earned run over seven innings. His record dropped to 5-6.

ON THE LINEUP CARD: Yasiel Puig will return to the Dodgers starting lineup Sunday for the series finale, Manager Don Mattingly said. Puig played as a reserve in the series opener Friday night and could have started Saturday, but Mattingly decided against it. The game Saturday was the fourth in a row that Puig didn’t start because of a ruptured callus on his left hand. “I knew we had a day game tomorrow,” Mattingly said. “I figured we’re playing OK. Give him one more day. This thing should be gone by then, where it’s total freedom.”

MEDICAL REPORT: Left-hander Paco Rodriguez will undergo arthroscopic surgery Thursday to remove loose bodies from the back of his throwing elbow, the Dodgers announced. Rodriguez will be sidelined eight to 10 weeks. Rodriguez has been on the disabled list since May 30. He has pitched in 10 games for the Dodgers this season, posting a 2.61 earned-run average. Rodriguez recently pitched in four minor league games as part of a rehabilitation assignment. He experienced discomfort in his last game, which was Tuesday. “It was kind of back to those same feelings of not being able to let it go,” Mattingly said.
