Golf roundup: Jhonattan Vegas wins the Canadian Open in a playoff over Charley Hoffman

Jhonattan Vegas successfully defended his RBC Canadian Open title Sunday at Glen Abbey, beating Charley Hoffman with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.

Vegas’ approach from the left bunker in the playoff on the par-five 18th hit the grass just above the sand lip and went through the green. The 32-year-old Venezuelan chipped to a foot — after racing a chip past the hole in regulation from the same area en route to a par — and won when Hoffman’s birdie try from the back bunker slid past the hole.

Vegas closed with a seven-under 65 to match Hoffman at 21-under 267. Hoffman, the third-round leader, birdied the 18th for a 68.

Vegas has three PGA Tour titles, also winning the 2011 Bob Hope Classic.

Ian Poulter was a stroke back after a 64, the best round of the day.

Langer wins his third Senior British Open

Bernhard Langer won the Senior British Open on Sunday in rain and wind at Royal Porthcawl in Bridgend, Wales, for his record-extending 10th senior major title and fifth in the last 10.

Fighting a sore throat all week in the difficult weather conditions, the 59-year-old German star closed with an even-par 72 to finish at four-under 280 and beat American Corey Pavin by three strokes.

Langer joined Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win three senior majors in a season, and won the event for the third time to match the tournament record.

Langer won the Regions Tradition and Senior PGA Championship — the first two of the PGA Champions Tour’s five majors — in consecutive weeks in May. He finished second behind Scott McCarron in the Senior Players Championship, losing the lead with a double bogey on the 71st hole. Nicklaus won three of the then-four majors in 1991.

Langer also won in 2010 at Carnoustie and took the 2014 event at Royal Porthcawl by 13 strokes. Tom Watson and Gary Player are the only other three-time winners, with Player’s titles coming before the event was a major or part of the PGA Champions Tour.

Langer also won the season-opening event in Hawaii in January and has 33 PGA Tour Champions titles. He’s second on the career victory list, 12 behind Hale Irwin.

The two-time Masters champion opened with a 69 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead, dropped into a five-way tie for first Friday with a 74 in the most difficult conditions of the week, and shot a 65 on Saturday to open a four-stroke advantage

Pavin closed with a 71. Fred Couples had a 68 to tie for third at even par with fellow American Billy Andrade (68) and Australia’s Peter Lonard (71). The 67-year-old Watson, a day after shooting his age, had a 75 to tie for 23rd at seven over.

Lee wins Ladies Scottish Open

Mi Hyang Lee took advantage of Hall of Famer Karrie Webb’s late double bogey to win the Ladies Scottish Open for her second LPGA Tour title.

A stroke ahead of Lee with two holes left at chilly Dundonald Links in Irivine, Webb dropped a shot back with the double bogey on the par-five 17th after driving into a bunker and having to play out backward.

Lee, playing in the group ahead of Webb, increased the margin to two with a birdie on the par-five 18th. Needing an eagle to force a playoff, Webb closed with a birdie to tie for second with Mi Jung Hur. Webb didn’t know she was two strokes behind because of the lack of a leaderboard on the final hole in the tuneup event for the Ricoh Women’s British Open next week at Kingsbarns.

Lee shot a six-under 66 to finish at six-under 282. After playing the front nine in five-under 31 with six birdies and a bogey, the South Korean player made eight straight pars before birdieing the last. She also was confused on 18 without a leaderboard, thinking she needed to an eagle to tie Webb.

Webb, tied for the third-round lead with Sei Young Kim at six under, had a 73. The 42-year-old Australian won the last of her 41 LPGA Tour titles in 2014 at the Founders Cup in Phoenix.

Lee also won the LPGA Tour’s 2014 Mizuno Classic in Japan.

Hur birdied the 18th for a 66. Carlota Ciganda (70) and Cristie Kerr (72) tied for fourth at four under. Kim (75) tied for sixth at three under with Sun Young Yoo (71).

The LPGA Tour sanctioned the event for the first time, teaming with the Ladies European Tour.

Smith claims European Open title

Jordan Smith beat defending champion Alexander Levy in a two-hole playoff to win the European Open on Sunday.

Levy led by a single shot at the 18th hole, but the French player had to tap in a tricky par putt to force the playoff after playing partner Smith, the overnight leader, holed his 10-foot birdie putt to go 13-under.

Smith’s close-range birdie in the playoff secured his first European Tour title in his 25th event.
