Racing! And now, the end is near, and so we face …

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we ponder the end of the racing year.

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to no racing next week. I know this newsletter has been going only a few months, but the break will be good. It also got me thinking if the racing calendar is just too long?

A plus to fewer dates would, in theory, be fuller fields. It would be a nice break for horsemen, although that’s not to say they can go away because the horses need attention every day, regardless of racing.

Negatives would be if you aren’t racing, you aren’t making money. That’s a tough one. You have these big facilities that would also be without revenue, but that would be offset by employees you wouldn’t have to pay, and I’m sure they wouldn’t.

The racinos could shut down for a week or two of racing and few would care because it’s not the ponies that are bringing people to their place.

Next week there will be racing in Kentucky, New York and Florida, but not here.

Next week there isn’t a singe stakes race of consequence between Dec. 18 to 22. Most places are closed at least on Christmas and many on Christmas Eve.

California racing rarely sets the tone for smart moves compared to other states. But given the way other states are run, it’s more of a death by drowning or fire type of analogy.

But California does have it right, a break during the holidays is a welcome sight.

The question, though, is should there be a couple of more weeks off during the year?

The answer man is in the house

Yes, the answer man, who is really a gender-neutral type of position, is back in the house to tell you things you may not know about racing.

The first question comes from Tom Hyland, who asks: “Why is it for workouts in California, they are always listed as “Handily” (h), while almost everywhere in the country, the works are listed as “Breezing” (b)?

There is no better person to answer that than Russell Hudak, who is the morning-line maker, and clocker and timer at Del Mar and Los Alamitos. He served in a similar capacity for decades at Hollywood Park.

And, so he speaks:

“Any discussion of workout listings should begin with a definition of the terms. For that I turned to The Racegoer’s Dictionary in Ainslie’s Complete Guide to Thoroughbred Racing. Breeze is defined as ‘Running under a stout hold, easily, without encouragement.’ Handily is defined ‘of a fairly strenuous workout under a hand ride without whipping.’

“Here in California, the clockers have always adhered closely to the definition. The term (B) breezing is used for workouts in which the Clockers observe a stout hold without any encouragement, only a small number of workouts receive this designation. It is a solid sign that the horse was working easily. Handily applies to the majority of workouts where the horses are encouraged to run primarily under a hand ride.

“Breeze is the term of choice for all workouts primarily on the East Coast. This is a long-standing policy.”

So, take that all you inaccurate East Coasters, and thanks, Russ.

The next question comes from Dennis Doran, who asks: “What constitutes a ‘voided’ claim?”

For this, we go to Rick Hammerle, the racing secretary at Santa Anita. And here’s what he had to say:

“After a claiming race, each horse that had a claim put in for it is examined by the state vet at the test barn. The horse is given a quick physical exam and is jogged to check for soundness. If, in the opinion of the examining vet, the horse shows any indication of unsoundness, the claim is voided.”

Thanks, Rick, luckily that’s not the case often.

If you’ve got something you always wanted to know or just needed a clarification on, send it along to johnacherwa@gmail.com

Last call for holiday ideas

I’m asking for your thoughts on what holiday gifts you would like to give horse racing people or organizations. Something like, “To Bolt D’Oro and Mick and Wendy Ruis, I would give them a 2-year-old colt of the year Eclipse Award.”

Still looking for more responses. And, if you remember, I said I need first and last names if you want me to consider your submission (unless you are Oprah, Beyonce or a Brazilian soccer player).

So, send it to me at johnacherwa@gmail.com and we’ll roll it out Monday. Put holiday gift in the subject field.

Los Alamitos review

The big news from Friday’s card is that long shots forced a pick-six carryover of about $17,000. Not a lot by big-track standards, but enough to grab a little attention as Sunday’s final day approached.

The culprits in the pick six were Four Gaels, who paid $45.80 in a 5 furlong race for 3-year-olds and up, in the sixth race and the seventh, an allowance optional claimer, in which Princess Kendra paid $19.60.

Los Alamitos preview

Los Alamitos will have its final stakes of the meeting with the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes, for 2-year-old Cal-breds over a mile. It’s the ninth of 10 races, with the first post at noon.

Bookies Luck is the 8-5 favorite for trainer Jeff Bonde and jockey Kent Desormeaux. The colt has won two straight stakes races, the I’m Smokin and Golden State Juvenile at Del Mar. He has three wins in six starts.

Intimidate is the 4-1 second-favorite, no doubt somewhat related to having Mike Smith as his jockey. Royal Trump is the third choice at 9-2.

Big races preview

Mark Ratzky’s LRC pick of the day

THIRD RACE: No. 1 Sallyanna (2-1)

Ran into a tigress on opening day but looks to be the controlling speed in this contest and is no stranger to the Orange County winner’s circle. Coast-to-coast with Kyle Frey.

Friday’s result: Sophia Del Sol, as the favorite, paid $3.00.

Mark Ratzky worked for 22 years for the Daily Racing Form and has been the simulcast announcer/publicity at Los Alamitos for the last 19 years.

Ed Burgart’s L.A. pick of the day

FOURTH RACE: No. 3 Rough Neck (3-1)

He is much better than first two races indicate when facing tougher company. He was bumped back from both sides leaving the gate in last seventh-place outing and lost position from between horses soon thereafter. He showed ability in 12.3 gate drill before debut and catches a soft maiden group.

AHIMSA quickly sped to the front, dictated pace from the inside into the lane, turned back rival past eighth marker then stretched margin under left hand urging. GRACIOUS ME forced the pace into and on the turn from outside winner, moved up bit and loomed in mid stretch, could not match leader late but safely held second. D D'S LUTE close up early, stalked three wide leaving backstretch and four wide leaving the turn and was clearly best of others. STAR DREAMIN stalked from the inside, remained along the rail into and through the stretch but failed to threaten. RAISING AIDA chased from the inside early, swung out four then five wide exiting the turn, remained outside and did not menace late. RIDE LADY RIDE was bit off the fence early, outside rival on the turn, came out further in upper stretch and lacked needed response late. JAZZY chased from the outside, was four wide into the bend then five wide into the stretch and also lacked needed rally. LOVING MOMENT was off slow and awkwardly, chased three wide into and on the turn, remained off the rail and weakened.
