Racing! Big weekend of Derby preps gives us more to think about

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as some new names bubble up on the Derby trail.

Two things to remember on Super Bowl Sunday. First, Santa Anita has an 11 a.m. post, so you can get home to watch the game. And, Los Alamitos has no racing. It is dark until Friday. And for our Northern California readers, Golden Gate starts at 11:15 a.m.

OK, let’s update the Kentucky Derby picture after Saturday’s three prep races.

Audible’s crushing performance in the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream should move him up on the Derby prediction charts. He was somewhat below the radar going into this race but that anonymity is gone now.

He was never in trouble, running near the lead until he just blew everyone away down the stretch, winning by 5½ lengths. He runs for Todd Pletcher and his jockey is Javier Castellano. The multi-Eclipse Award winning Castellano was recently named to ride Bolt D’Oro, replacing Corey Nakatani. So, which horse will he choose if they both make the Derby? Way too early to think about.

The Withers Stakes at Aqueduct was supposed to be a battle between Avery Island and Firenze Fire, and that’s what happened. But Avery Island made no doubt that he was the best over the 1 1/8 miles. He glided through the stretch after sitting in second through mid-turn. Firenze Fire was working hard in the stretch but couldn’t make up any ground. The winning margin was two lengths.

Perhaps the weakest of the three Derby prep races was the Robert Lewis at Santa Anita. It was won by Lombo for trainer Michael Pender and jockey Flavien Prat. My colleague Eric Sondheimer was there to capture the happenings on an excellent Saturday card with four graded stakes races. You can read Eric’s story here.

So, the points race for the Derby has Good Magic and Firenze Fire with 24 points. You’re on the bubble in the mid 20s, but likely to make the field with 30. McKinzie has 20 points and Bolt D’Oro, Solomini, Instilled Regard and Avery Island all have 14.

Santa Anita preview

Remember, early post of 11 a.m. today. And, if you are a 3-year-old filly, this is your lucky day. (Of course, it would be even more amazing if your filly could actually read this.)

Anyway, there are four races restricted to fillies that are 3. But the big one is the 1 mile, $200,000 Las Virgenes Stakes. It’s only got six entrants, likely because of the presence of Dream Tree, undefeated in three starts, including the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos. She’s the 3-5 favorite.

She was bought for $750,000 so expectations are high. She’s from the Bob Baffert barn who, as usual, has no shortage of good 3 year olds. Drayden Van Dyke is aboard and she is no doubt pointed to the Santa Anita Oaks, and, if all goes well, to the first Friday in May for the Kentucky Oaks.

Thirteen Squared is the second favorite at 5-2 and assumes the role of the “other Baffert.” Tyler Baze gets the ride.

Sunday will also be the 14th renewal of the Super Bowl Party Starter Handicap. It’s more of a great marketing ploy than must-see race. There are 10 older horses going to 1 1/8 miles on the turf. The winning owner gets and NFL autographed football, although I’d be more interested in the winner share of the $40,000 purse.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 10 Kochees (3-1)

Bay Area shipper from the high-percentage Jonathan Wong stable comes off a sharp win over the Golden Gate synthetic and now ships south to run in this $8,000 claimer. He's drawn well outside, can handle dirt and looks like a short-priced “single” in the late exotics.

Saturday Result: A Little Bit Me got a gorgeous trip, loomed boldly at the top of stretch, then lost her punch late and wound up third.
