Racing! Things starting to heat up again on the 3-year-old trail

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we ready for a big race at Gulfstream.

The path to the Kentucky Derby will likely be a shade more clear after Saturday, but the following Saturday things will really shuffle up. To keep you on the cutting edge of what’s happening, we’ve got the insightful Jon White, the morning-line maker at Santa Anita, to analyze what to look for and what to expect. Here’s this week’s look at his Top 10 with an eye to the future.

So, Jon, it’s in your hands.

“No changes to the Top 10 from last week. The big story this week is the 2018 debut of Good Magic, the Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male champion of 2017. He heads a field of 10 entered in Saturday's Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

“Owned by e Five Racing Throughbreds and Stonestreet Stables and trained by Chad Brown, Good Magic will be making his first start since he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile by 4 1/4 emphatic lengths at Del Mar on Nov. 4. Good Magic became the first maiden to ever win that race, though it is fair to say expectations certainly were quite high for the Curlin colt even before he made his first career start in that he was a $1 million auction purchase as a yearling.

“At this stage on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, I see a ‘big three’ consisting of McKinzie, Good Magic and Bolt d'Oro, with a drop off after that. McKinzie had another terrific workout last Saturday for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, seven furlongs at Santa Anita clocked in 1:25.40. Bolt d'Oro had an important gate drill Monday at Santa Anita, six furlongs timed in 1:12.00. McKinzie and Bolt d'Oro might meet in Santa Anita's San Felipe Stakes on March 10.

“Good Magic no doubt will be a strong favorite in the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth. He has been more than holding his own in workouts with Economic Model, a 5-year-old. All Economic Model did in his first 2018 start last Saturday at Gulfstream was to win the Hal's Hope Stakes.

“It appears that it's all systems are go for the start of Good Magic's 3-year-old campaign. However, a couple of his Fountain of Youth foes — Free Drop Billy and Strike Power — look capable of possibly giving the 2-year-old champ a good run for his money.

“Free Drop Billy was a ‘no show’ in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile when he finished ninth, 19 1/4 lengths behind Good Magic. But Free Drop Billy did win the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland last year and finished second to Audible in the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream earlier this year. Dale Romans trains Free Drop Billy, a Union Rags colt.

“Strike Power, conditioned by Mark Hennig, is two for two. A son of Speightstown, Strike Power romped to an eight-length victory at first asking in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race at Gulfstream, then won the 7-furlong Swale Stakes at that track by nearly three lengths. Can Strike Power do well in his first try going farther than seven furlongs? We will find out the answer to that question on Saturday.”

Santa Anita review

First Dudette was the winner of Thursday’s feature, for 3-year-old fillies going 7 furlongs. She took the lead at the top of the stretch to beat a late running Poetic by a half-length in the allowance race.

“We got this filly in late January,” Trainer Brian Koriner told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “We knew she could run. As confident as [jockey] Rajiv [Maragh] looked out there, it made me feel pretty confident going into the far turn. We’ll look for a stakes for her next start.”

It was only a four-horse race with no show wagering. First Dudette paid $14.80 and $7.40. The heavily favored Cognitive, who went off at 2-5, finished third.

Friday’s card with a 1 p.m. post isn’t too bad. There are two five-horse fields, but there are two eight-horse and four nine-horse fields. What is a little unusual is only two turf races and none down the hill. Guess they are giving the signature course a day off.

The first two races are maiden special weights, a mile on the turf for Cal-breds 4 and up and a mile on the dirt for 3 and up fillies and mares. Both races carry a purse of $54,000.

The seventh is a 6½ furlong allowance race for horses 4 and up with a $58,000 purse.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

SEVENTH RACE: No. 2 Red Lightning (7-2)

Speedy colt from the high-percentage Billy Morey stable ran well in the Palos Verdes when finishing third after contesting the pace but might be able to shake loose and keep going with these. With rain expected, he may catch one of those sealed tracks that are conducive to front -runners.

Thursday Result: Candy Ruler was where we wanted her to be early but came up flat in the lane and wound up a disappointing fourth race in the fifth race.

Los Alamitos weekend preview

This weekly segment is now in the hands of Orlando Gutierrez, marketing and media maven at Los Al. So, the floor is yours, Orlando.

“After beating eight top mares in the Denim N Diamonds Handicap on Feb. 17, Strawfinders Jessee is ready to do it again when she takes on eight new and mostly younger rivals in the $18,000 Terrific Energy Handicap on Saturday night. The Terrific Energy is the last of eight races going at about 9:15 p.m. First post is 6 p.m.

“Owned by C.K. and Laurel Allen, Strawfinders Jessee has never faced any of the mares in this group before in a stakes race, but she’ll be tested by La Pacifica Handicap winner Staggering Stride and Jess Hawk, who enters after running a third to BH Lisas Boy in the Grade 1 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship on Feb. 11. Designs By Dinasty is another of the top contenders in this race.

“Strawfinders Jessee dominated the Denim N Diamonds two weeks ago, taking the lead shortly after the start on the way to a length victory. She had previously finished third in the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap behind Kiddy Up Cowgirl and Thermonuclear Energy.

“Last Saturday, seven 2 year olds posted workouts as part of the first morning of gate drills for the freshman class of 2018. Among the headliners were a Walk Thru Fire filly named Razzel Dazzel from the Roberto Dominguez barn and a Favorite Cartel colt named Chocolatito owned by all-time leading quarter-horse owner Ed Allred. Razzel Dazzel posted the morning’s fastest 220-yard time of 12.50 seconds. Chocolatito topped a three-team set for Allred and trainer Scott Willoughby in a 220-yard time of 12.60.

“’He broke just a bit slow,” Willoughby said. ‘The horse inside of him was messing around a little bit. Chocolatito broke behind them, but then ran by them and looked like he did it pretty easy. [Jockey Cesar Gomez] is pretty excited about him.’

“All quarter-horse gate works are available for viewing on all devices by clicking here. Weather permitting more 2-year-old gate works will take place tomorrow morning.”

He’s back! Ed Burgart’s LA play of the day

SEVENTH RACE: No. 3 One Hot Party (7-2)

She has looked strong winning her last three outings and new trainer Justin Clark has a solid record with first-out claims. He displays optimism by raising her from the $8,000 claimed level to the $16,000 condition. In addition, she is a three-time winner who fits the restricted non-winners-of-two condition since her victories have come for claiming tags of $12,500 or less. While I suggest a win wager, also make exacta boxes with #4 Twisted Sifter and #7 Warhock.

(Note: And thanks to Chris Wade for so ably filling in while Ed was away.)
