Kings’ Tanner Pearson is dealing with the emotions of being a healthy scratch

Here’s how left wing Tanner Pearson assessed the Kings’ trip so far:

“It changes daily around here,” Pearson said.

Pearson was coming off his first healthy scratch this season, against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.

The assessment applied to developments Wednesday, the day after the Kings beat Boston, 9-2. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff was put on waivers and the expectation was that defenseman Kevin Gravel would be called up Thursday from the Kings’ American Hockey League affiliate in Ontario.

There was also concern for the health of All-Star goalie Jonathan Quick, who appeared to suffer a lower-body injury in the final seconds against the Bruins. General Manager Dean Lombardi said that Quick was day to day.

Quick stayed off the ice during Wednesday’s practice at Boston University. Team executives were working the phones during practice and the plan was to recall goalie Peter Budaj from Ontario.

Budaj has 26 victories with the Reign, eight of them shutouts, and a goals-against average of 1.58. Quick’s backup, Jhonas Enroth, won his last start, at San Jose on Jan. 24, and appeared in relief in the loss to the Ducks on Feb. 4. Enroth is 4-3-1 with a goals-against average of 2.11 and one shutout.

“I think all my games have been very solid,” Enroth said. “Even the games I gave up a couple goals were pretty solid too. I’ve been feeling good the whole year. Obviously, I wish I played more games but I guess that’s the way they do it here. Just going to have to stay ready and try to do my best when I get a chance.”

Darryl Sutter’s outlook

Coach Darryl Sutter declined to offer assessments when asked about the bottom part of the Kings’ lineup against Boston.

“We won the game,” he said. “I’m not getting into individual stuff. We’re trying to win games. I’m not getting into anything else. They have to play a specific significant role on our team. If they can’t do it on a consistent basis, then somebody else gets to do it.”

Sutter did mention Ehrhoff, though, who signed with the Kings as a free agent.

“Nothing wrong with Christian Ehrhoff,” Sutter said. “We’re not exactly world beaters here. We don’t have the best defense in the league or the best team in the league. We’re trying to get better in a hurry.”

Rob Blake, the team’s assistant general manager, spoke highly of Gravel.

“Long body, similar to [Derek] Forbort,” Blake said. “He’s played real well all year. …We want to get a look at him.”

Pearson, conversely, was grappling with being the odd-man out.

“Obviously, you don’t want to be a healthy scratch,” he said. “But I want to get back in the lineup as soon as possible.”
