“I don’t think 40,000 people paid to watch him ump tonight.” — Bryce Harper, Washington Nationals outfielder, after he was ejected by umpire Marvin Hudson on Wednesday.

“Every pitcher does it. As a hitter you want them to do it so they have a better grip, so we don’t get hit in the head. But just hide it better next time.” — Freddie Freeman, Atlanta Braves first baseman, after Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Will Smith was ejected — and later suspended eight games — for use of a foreign substance. The substance — Smith said it was a combination of rosin and sunscreen — was clearly visible on his right arm.

“I’m sure the colonel tried a lot of recipes before he came up with his secret one for the chicken, so we’re going to keep working it until we find ours.”— Dan Jennings, Miami Marlins manager, on trying to find the right batting order. The Marlins lost their first four games after moving Jennings from general manager to manager Monday.
