NFL notes: Panthers’ Cam Newton, Dolphins’ Jay Ajayi take part in team workouts

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton threw passes during the team period for the first time in two weeks as the team wrapped up training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.

Newton participated in red zone drills, but did not throw any long passes on Sunday while rehabbing from soreness in his right shoulder that stems from rotator cuff surgery in March.

Meanwhile, Miami Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi joined team drills for the first time since he was sidelined by a concussion July 31.

Ajayi wore pads at camp in Davie, Fla., for the first time since the injury, but left practice early because of hydration issues in the 90-degree morning sunshine. Coach Adam Gase said the issue was merely a matter of Ajayi regaining his conditioning.

Ajayi had a breakout season in 2016, when he ran for 1,272 yards and had consecutive 200-yard games.

It’s unclear at this point if Newton will participate in this week’s scrimmages against the Titans or the team’s second preseason game at Tennessee on Aug. 19.

Coach Ron Rivera said after the team’s final training camp practice that it was a “good step” for Newton, according to the team’s website.

“It was very positive,” Rivera told the team’s website after practice. “A lot of good things happened. I’m pleased with his progress.”

In other training camp news:

-- Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Marqise Lee was carted off the field Sunday with a right leg injury, a potentially significant setback for a team already without rookie running back Leonard Fournette. Lee fell to the ground during 7-on-7 drills and immediately grabbed his leg. Linebacker Telvin Smith called for trainers. Lee’s lower leg was immobilized before he was taken off the field on a cart. Coach Doug Marrone had no update after practice, saying “we’re really not going to get anything until the doctor sees him.” The injury happened during Jacksonville’s first practice in its new indoor facility. It came hours after the team shut down Fournette because of a “nagging issue” with one of his feet.

Lions 24, at Colts 10: Jake Rudock threw two touchdown passes to Kenny Golladay, leading the Detroit Lions to a 24-10 victory Sunday over the injury-depleted Indianapolis Colts. Rudock played most of the first 2 1/2 quarters and completed 13 of 21 passes for 142 yards.

Mathew Stafford was two-of-three passing for 36 yards during his only series, which ended on an interception. The Lions made it look easy. Rudock hooked up with Golladay on a 23-yard TD pass in the first quarter and a 15-yard score in the second. Matt Prater made a 28-yard field goal and his 53-yarder came up short as time expired in the first half.

All the Colts could muster without Andrew Luck was 230 total yards, 14 first downs, a 42-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri in the second quarter and a 1-yard TD run from Troymaine Pope as time ran out.
