Robert Griffin III to start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns

From the sounds of things, players are really buying into what new coach Hue Jackson is selling. They just need a lot of new players.

Despite sitting out last season, Robert Griffin III never doubted he’d be a starter again.

His belief became reality Monday, when Coach Hue Jackson said “it’s time” to give Griffin the opportunity to lead the Cleveland Browns on the field.

Jackson, who chose Griffin after a weekend in which the 26-year-old helped Cleveland’s first-team offense in successful scrimmages, has lofty standards that Griffin will need to meet in order to keep the job.

“He has gained the respect from his teammates, the coaching staff and the entire organization that is necessary for him to lead our offense and really the entire team,” Jackson said.

Griffin beat out Josh McCown for the starting spot, leaving the 37-year-old’s future with the Browns in doubt. Griffin signed a two-year, $15-million free-agent contract in March and has taken the majority of first-team reps during the Browns’ organized team activities and training camp. Griffin has the starting quarterback job for the first time since 2014, when he played for the Redskins. He did not take a snap for the Washington in 2015 and was released March 7.

Etc.

The New York Jets activated running back Khiry Robinson from the active/physically-unable-to-perform list after he sat out the start of training camp while rehabilitating from a broken right leg. … In their first depth chart, the Denver Broncos listed Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian as co-No. 1 quarterback. Rookie Paxton Lynch is listed as a backup. … Wide receiver Lance Moore retired, telling the Atlanta Falcons his heart wasn’t in it only three days after signing with the team as a free agent.
