Pac-12 basketball: UCLA women finish regular season with win at Arizona State

Kennedy Burke scored 16 points with nine rebounds, Jordan Canada had 12 with eight boards and eight assists and No. 15 UCLA held off Arizona State, 55-52, on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz., in the regular-season finale.

Relli Richardson made a three-pointer and the Sun Devils made four free throws during a 7-0 run to take a 52-50 lead with 1:46 left to play.

Canada tied the score with two free throws on the next possession and Nicole Kornet made one of two after grabbing an offensive rebound following an ASU turnover.

Canada then made two more free throws with 21 seconds left after a Sun Devils miss.

Arizona State then missed two more three-point shots in the closing seconds.

The Bruins (22-7, 13-5 Pac-12) made seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter while the Sun Devils (18-11, 9-9) were four of nine.

Sophie Bruner had 20 points to move into seventh place on Arizona State’s career list and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Sun Devils had a 10-0 run in the second quarter for a seven-point lead, the biggest for either team.

at Arizona 67, USC 62: LaBrittney Jones scored 18 points, including making 10 of 13 free throws, and blocked seven shots as the Wildcats held off the Trojans.

Jones grabbed the rebound of a Courtney Jaco missed three-pointer, preventing USC from forging a 65-65 tie, and was fouled with three seconds left. She made both free throws to push the game out of reach. Arizona (14-15, 5-13 Pac-12) emerged as the 11th seed in the conference tournament.

Jaco finished with 12 points for the Trojans (14-15, 5-13) but was two of eight from three-point range. Minyon Moore led USC with 21 points, three assists and three steals. USC was awarded the No. 9 seed and opens the Pac-12 tourney against eighth-seeded Cal on March 2 at Seattle’s Key Arena. Arizona meets sixth-seeded Oregon later that day.

Jones has scored 1,230 points in her career, moving up to 12th on the Wildcats all-time list. Malena Washington and Dejza James scored 14 each for Arizona.

at No. 10 Oregon State 71, California 56: Sydney Wiese scored 19 points and Oregon State clinched the Pac-12 regular-season title outright with a win over California.

Marie Gulich added 14 points while Kolbie Orum had 11 for the Beavers (27-3, 16-2 Pac-12). Jaelyn Brown came off the bench to score 21 points and Kristine Anigwe had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Bears (18-12, 6-12).

MEN

at Washington State 79, Washington 71: Josh Hawkinson finished with 22 points and seven boards and provided key baskets down the stretch to power Washington State past in-state foe Washington 79-71 on Sunday.

The win marks the Cougars’ first season sweep of the Huskies since 2010-11, and extends the Huskies losing streak to a school-record 10 games.

Washington (9-19, 2-14 Pac-12) lead for the majority of the second half, until an Ike Iroegbu layup gave WSU (13-15, 6-10) the lead with four minutes to go. Hawkinson hit a 3, and had a put-back to put the Cougars up 71-64 with two minutes remaining.

Malik Dime cut the deficit to three with 1:06 left, but Malachi Flynn sealed the win with a 3-pointer on the other end.

Charles Callison pitched in 18 points and five boards for WSU. Noah Dickerson paced Washington with 16 points and 13 boards.
