Rams vs. New York Giants: How they match up

Rams pass offense vs. Giants pass defense: Case Keenum is coming off a record-setting performance against the Detroit Lions. He completed 19 consecutive passes at one point and threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns while spreading the ball to seven receivers. Receiver Kenny Britt has a team-best 30 catches for 492 yards and has scored two touchdowns. Brian Quick has scored three touchdowns. The Giants signed former Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins to a huge free-agent contract during the off-season. He has two interceptions. The Giants are giving up 266.8 yards passing a game, which ranks 22nd in the NFL.

EDGE: Rams.

Rams run offense vs. Giants run defense: The offensive line opened holes for Todd Gurley early in the game against the Lions, which helped the passing game. Gurley, though, still is looking for a breakout performance. He has averaged 2.9 yards per carry. Receiver Tavon Austin has carried 12 times for 52 yards and Keenum ran for a score last week after a good fake to Gurley. End Olivier Vernon and tackle Damon Harrison were off-season additions to a defense that is giving up 96.8 yards rushing per game, which ranks 12th in the NFL. Former USC linebacker Devon Kennard has 28 tackles for New York.

EDGE: Giants.

Giants pass offense vs. Rams pass defense: Eli Manning has completed 65% of his passes, eight for touchdowns, with six interceptions. Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has 35 catches for 581 yards and three scores. Manning also will look for Victor Cruz and Sterling Shepard against a Rams defense giving up 246.2 yards passing per game. The Rams failed to get much of a pass rush in the last two games, but end Robert Quinn is expected to return. Tackle Aaron Donald has three sacks. Cornerback Trumaine Johnson remains sidelined because of an ankle injury, so E.J. Gaines and Troy Hill will start again.

EDGE: Giants.

Giants run offense vs. Rams run defense: Rashad Jennings rushed for only 15 yards in nine carries last week for an offense that averages 76 yards rushing per game. That’s not imposing, but the Rams recently have struggled against star running backs such as Buffalo’s LeSean McCoy and upstarts such as Detroit’s Zach Zenner. Middle linebacker Alec Ogletree has a team-best 68 tackles for a unit that is giving up 115.7 yards rushing per game. With Michael Brockers sidelined again because of injury, Cam Thomas and Dominique Easley will play beside Donald.

EDGE: Rams.

Special teams: The spotlight is on special teams in the wake of domestic abuse allegations against Giants kicker Josh Brown, who did not make the trip. The Giants signed Robbie Gould, who was released by the Chicago Bears in September after 11 seasons. Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein has made all nine of his field-goal attempts and 11 extra-point kicks. Punter Johnny Hekker, who has punted twice in each of the last two games, is averaging 45.3 yards per kick and has put 16 of 31 inside the 20-yard line. Benny Cunningham averages 28 yards per kickoff return, Austin 8.9 per punt return.

EDGE: Rams.

Gary Klein’s pick: The Rams are coming off consecutive losses against Buffalo and Detroit. In both games, the offense failed to come through with scoring drives late in the fourth quarter. This game comes at the end of a long 10-day trip that messed with body clocks and routines. Maybe that will be a good thing, maybe not. The Giants did not arrive in England until Friday, so they were able to approach this as a standard road trip. The organization is engulfed in controversy because of the Brown situation but that should not affect the team’s performance unless new kicker Gould struggles after a long layoff.
