The Narbonne-San Pedro football rivalry, a game that usually decides the Marine League championship, has been a one-sided affair in recent years.

The fifth-ranked Gauchos won the last four meetings and continued the streak with Friday night’s victory.

Narbonne dominated from start to finish, defeating San Pedro, 41-3, at El Camino College behind an electric performance from junior quarterback Jalen Chatman.

The Gauchos secured at least a share of its fifth-straight Marine League crown while keeping the potential for a perfect season intact.

Chatman completed 18 of 21 passes for 324 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 23 yards and another score.

“Jalen [Chatman] is a talent; he’s a Division I guy,” Narbonne Coach Manuel Douglas said.

“He runs our scheme well, but what makes him special this year is that he came in ready to go.”

Chatman came ready to play on Friday.

His first touchdown pass came on a 15-yard strike to Stephon Robinson at the 10:49 mark of the first quarter. That duo connected again on a 45-yard touchdown pass early in the second, giving Narbonne (9-0, 4-0) an early 14-0 lead.

While the Gauchos’ offense took care of business on its end, the defense had its own stellar game.

The three points Narbonne surrendered to San Pedro (7-2, 3-1) came by way of a 37-yard field goal from Tanner Carcamo. To date, the Gauchos have only allowed 11 points total in Marine League play.

“What really makes us dynamic is our defense,” Douglas said. “We’re fast and physical. Only three points have been scored against my first-string defense (in league).”

The Gauchos’ defense was flying all over the field, keeping the San Pedro offense to 175 total yards, and just 71 in the first 24 minutes.

Chatman turned his attention from Robinson to wide receiver Tre Walker in the second half, completing touchdowns of 19 and 51 yards to close out the win. Walker finished with nine receptions for 165 yards while Robinson had five catches for 113 yards.
